More than 200 people died last weekend due to heavy flooding in the capital Kathmandu and surrounding areas. Experts are calling it one of the worst floods in decades.
Exceptionally heavy monsoon rains on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th of September left much of Kathmandu underwater. The rainfall caused the Bagmati River, which flows through the city, to rise more than two meters above safe levels. Entire neighborhoods, bridges and roads were completely washed away.
204 bodies have already been recovered, while at least 30 people are still missing or isolated. Hundreds of people were injured, and many of the victims were on buses swept away by rising waters as highways were flooded.
